At Kaukokiito, we are constantly working to improve transport efficiency by optimising vehicle load factors and routing. We utilise robotics in transport planning, freeing up time for managerial duties and more demanding load planning, which both require human intelligence. Furthermore, as technology advances, information derived from shipment data will allow us and our customers to delve deeper into the supply chain to identify potential cost savings through customer reporting.
We can provide various reports on e.g. shipment volumes, weight class distribution, delivery reliability, and transport-related emissions. By diving deeper into these reports, together we can identify areas for improvement and ways to enhance operations.
Our customers can streamline the flow of their shipments through the choices they make. At the same time, we at Kaukokiito are constantly developing new ways to optimise our transport operations.

Towards a stress-free transport chain
Our customers can also directly influence transport optimisation through their own actions. The most common measures include larger batch sizes, accurate order data, proactive planning and timely transport orders, and secure packaging.
Larger batch sizes. Whenever possible, it is advisable to consolidate deliveries into larger batches rather than sending several small shipments. It is more cost-effective to send 1,000 kg in one go rather than to send five separate 200 kg shipments, as the price per kilogram is lower for larger volumes. You can often save on collection costs by consolidating pick-ups to specific, pre-agreed weekdays.
Accurate order details. When all the necessary information is correctly entered in the transport order, the shipment travels through the transport chain without a hitch. Investigating incomplete data causes delivery delays. For example, if length dimensions are missing, the shipment’s actual size can come as a surprise to production; the delivery can then be delayed because the shipment does not fit into the space allocated based on the initial data. When order details are recorded accurately, production planning is easier and the resulting transport data is reliable.
Proactivity and timely transport orders. By placing your pick-up order well in advance, you will ensure resource availability and avoid rushing things. Rushing always comes at a price. When you forget to order a pick-up, or some other unexpected situation changes your schedules, but your shipment must still leave the same day, we’ll do our best to help. It might be possible to arrange a pick-up, but special collection will incur additional costs. Shipments delivered separately because of urgency are a different matter entirely. Although we don’t officially provide courier services, we can work small miracles to help our customers in a tight spot.
If you need a full transport unit, or a trailer or combined transport, please remember to place your order in good time, no later than 1 pm on the previous working day.
Proper packaging reduces the risk of damage during transport. Freight pricing depends on load stackability. Stackable pallets with collars typically mean lower costs compared to non-stackable units. It is always best to use the smallest possible pallet for packing, while ensuring that the product does not overhang the pallet edges for protection.
Kaukoputki will boost information flow
In the supply chain, tracking per handling unit is generated from electronic scanning at different stages of the process, from pick-up to final delivery. It allows the system to keep track of the location where the shipment was last processed and which transport stage comes next. You can track the progress of your shipment in our free online service called Kaukoputki.
The mobile device our drivers utilise notifies them if an item is not part of the driver’s planned route or if the shipment is still missing an item. It also helps to reduce human errors in the supply chain. The benefits for delivery reliability are undeniable: when a shipment is delivered to the right location, on time and intact, life is easier for everyone, allowing you to focus on your business with total peace of mind. The reliability of the Kaukokiito chain is excellent, and our customers praise us for our dependable service. In 2024, our delivery performance again reached a record high.
You can also use Kaukoputki to send the receiving customer an email notification with a tracking link. When the recipient has access to real-time shipment tracking, there will be fewer inquiries to the sender’s customer service department. In the past, when people still used paper waybills, the freight list was stapled to the waybill. Now you can attach the freight list to the order, and the recipient can print it out directly from the online service.
Our technological development has been tremendous in recent years and has required a lot of behind-the-scenes, invisible work. We aim to make our customers’ everyday lives easier and more efficient by providing ever better logistics solutions – so, the work continues. We are, after all, heading towards the future.
